About Rethymno

Rethymno, the capital of the prefecture, bearing the same name, is a small town in the north part of Crete. It's population ranges around thirty thousand 30.000 and it's economy is based on agriculture and tourism. A big part of it's night life is given by the University students that study here and the army base outside of the city.

The city has a port and a daily line to Piraeus and daily cruises to other nearby islands and other places of Crete also take place. The Rethymno prefecture, has no airport, but the surrounding ones (being Chania -Candia- and Heraklion) do, so it is not a big of a problem. These nearby cities have a population of around two hundred thousands (200.000) each and are some one hour away, so travelling there is not a big deal.

In the center of the city, lies the Venetian town with it's characteristic architecture with some touch of the Muslim Invaders. Also the Latin influence is shown in names like Piazza Rimondi, Porto Guerro etc.
Outside the town lie a lot of villages, that in contrast to the villages of the Macedonian and Hepirotian villages, flourish in both economic wise and population wise. There the Cretan folklore remains unaltered.
