Tapas Bar

Wednesday evening is a good chance for a quiet night out. A quiet night out is a good chance for food and wine, and both of the later ones, are a good chance for the official premmiere of Tastebud.Gr and the winning lottery ticket was for «Tapas bar» in Mellissinou street, the street that hosts many of the winter night clubs of our town.
The legendary origin of tapas is said to derive from the King of Spain Alfonso the X. Tradition has it that he recovered from a serious illness after consuming wine and food in small amounts. Ever since he forbade alcohol to be served without food. The less blue-blooded version holds it that the drunks of spain use to cover their glasses of sherry or sweet wine with a piece of bread, and this is what it led to.
Whatever the case, Tapas the way we know them, started in Basque country and its not accidental that Bilbao itself is considered to be a Michelen capital, since the small size of the portions doesn't mean that it is made carelessly.
The idea of wine and small bites of food is not new to the southern Europeans, and Greeks have been eating “mezze” with their wine for centuries, so it really is no surprise that one of these little restaurants reached Rethymno. The material is known, the idea is known, what is not known is the recipies and the different kinds of wine.
We decided to keep it Tex-Mex during our fist visit, ignoring the tempting catalogue of spanish jamon, potato tortilla and other warm and cold appetizers and rather pick quessadillas, fajitas and burritos and of course a looooot of sangria.
I always say that fresh material can make even a simple recipe taste great and the people behind the bar, know that! Closing, I think that its a great way to spend a warm evening with warm company!
